Questions from testers and developers

Straight answers to the things testers and housebuilders ask us before they sign up. If yours isn't here, email support@testconnect.co.uk and a person will reply.

Cost

What it costs, and why

Free for one tester. Pro is £5 a month per tester. See pricing.

How do I join?

TestConnect is invite-only while we grow the network of local independents. Request an invite and we'll email you a code.

Is it really free?

Yes. The Free plan costs nothing, has no time limit and needs no card. It covers one tester: marketplace work with route fit, results, photos and certificates, up to 15 of your own jobs a month, and as many office and finance users as you like.

What's the catch?

There isn't one hiding in the small print. If you want more than the Free plan gives you, Pro is £5 a month per tester. We don't take a commission on your work, and we don't sell your data.

Why do you charge at all?

Running TestConnect isn't free: servers, secure storage for years of your photos and certificates, and support all cost money. We charge £5 a month per tester to cover those costs, not to make a profit.

Will the price go up?

We aim to keep it at £5 and only cover our costs. If prices ever change, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice, and you can cancel or drop to Free before it applies.

Do I need a card?

No. Not for the Free plan, and not for the free trial. You only add a card if you decide to pay for Pro.

Do you take a cut of my jobs?

No. TestConnect takes no commission on any job or payment.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every new tester business gets Pro free for 60 days, for the whole team, to get a feel for it. No card needed.

What happens after the free trial?

We remind you 7, 3 and 1 days before it ends. To keep Pro, add a card and it's £5 a month per tester. If you do nothing, you move to the Free plan and keep all your data.

What if I stop paying?

You move to the Free plan and nothing is deleted. If you have more than one tester, the others can still sign in and see their work, but only one tester can take new jobs until you upgrade again.

Is there a contract?

No. Pro is month to month. Cancel any time in the app and you move to the Free plan.

Can my office or admin person use it? Do they pay?

Yes, and no. Office administrators, finance and read-only users are free and unlimited on every plan, including Free. They can run the diary, prepare jobs, enter results for a named tester and, on Pro, do the invoicing. They can't carry out tests themselves.

Schemes, documents and results

We're a resource, not a scheme

We don't audit, certify or police anyone. Your scheme and building control do their jobs; we just make yours easier.

Is TestConnect a scheme? Do I still lodge with my scheme?

No, we're not a scheme. We don't audit, certify or police anyone, and we don't lodge for you. You lodge with your scheme exactly as you do now, then upload the certificate and lodgement reference against the plot so the assessor or developer can see it.

Do I have to upload my documents, insurance or ID?

No. To sign up we ask for your name, email, business name, base postcode and which tests you do. No ID and no documents. If a marketplace job needs a scheme, such as an air test, you add your scheme membership number because the certificate and lodgement need it, and posters see it marked as self-declared. Calibration dates are optional and only there to remind you. Insurance details are optional too.

Will assessors see my failed tests?

Only on their own jobs. The assessor or developer who booked a test sees its result, pass or fail, because they need it for building control. Results of your private jobs are never shared. Your pass rate is never shown to anyone choosing a tester, and testers are never ranked by it.

Can a failed test get me a bad review?

No. Feedback is about your service: turning up when agreed, communication, professionalism and report quality. It's never about the result. The forms don't ask how the test went, and comments about a fail are removed if reported. You can reply to any comment, and you rate sites too.

Your data

Your data is yours

Private by default, and you can take all of it with you whenever you like.

Who sees my prices, clients and private jobs?

Only people in your own organisation. Your private jobs, clients and prices are invisible to everyone else, including assessors, other testers and us. Route fit uses your private jobs to work out the extra driving, but never shows them. Our support staff can only look if you give permission, for a limited time, and every look is logged.

Can I get my data out?

Yes, any time. "Download all my data" gives you a ZIP of everything: jobs, clients, results, photos, certificates and invoices.

How is my data protected? Is it GDPR compliant?

TestConnect is built to follow UK GDPR. Your data is hosted with Amazon Web Services, each organisation's records are kept apart inside the database itself, connections are encrypted, and backups run every night. Read the privacy notice for the detail.

Do I have to share my location?

No. Location is shared only if you switch it on, only while you're on your way to a job, and it stops when you arrive. Only your latest position is held, and it is deleted when the journey ends.

What if TestConnect shuts down?

You can download all your data at any time, so you're never locked in. If we ever had to close, we'd give you at least 90 days' notice by email and keep the download working so you could take everything with you.

Who runs TestConnect?

Wilgenry Software Ltd, a UK software company. We built TestConnect as a resource to make testing easier, and we aim to break even, not to make money out of testers.

Marketplace work

Extra work, only if you want it

Jobs from assessors and developers, shown with what they add to the day you've already got.

Who is TestConnect for?

Self-employed air tightness, sound and ventilation testers and small testing firms, typically with one to ten testers, though any testing business can use it. You keep your own business, prices and clients; we take no commission, and we're not a scheme or an employer. Together, local independents give housebuilders and assessors one place to book a reliable local tester, so you can win work that would be hard to cover on your own.

How does marketplace work get offered to me?

Assessors and developers post tests. You see the ones in your area for the tests you do, each with the fee, town and postcode district, date window and the extra minutes and miles it adds to your day, such as "+12 min from your route". If it suits, accept with a tap. The address and site contacts appear once the job is yours.

Do I have to take marketplace jobs?

No. It's there if you want it, and you can use TestConnect just for your own work. Nothing happens if you ignore or turn down a job.

Can I use it just for my own jobs?

Yes. Add your own clients and jobs, run your diary, record results and photos, and keep certificates against each plot. Free covers up to 15 of your own jobs a month; Pro is unlimited.

Can I belong to more than one organisation?

Yes. A tester can belong to their own sole-trader business and to a company they subcontract for. Each organisation pays for its own testers.

Using the app

On site and in the office

One account on your phone, your tablet and the office computer.

Does it work offline on site?

Yes. Jobs you've opened are saved on your phone, so you can see the details and enter results, photos and notes with no signal. They upload when you're back in signal, and you can see what's still waiting.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, both, and in any web browser, all from the same account.

How long does setup take?

A few minutes once you have your invite code. Your name, email, business name, base postcode and the tests you do, and you're in. Add your working area and hours later if you want marketplace work.

Can I import my clients?

Yes. Save your client list as a CSV file (any spreadsheet can do this), then go to Clients → Import. You match up the columns, check a preview, and choose whether to skip or update anyone already there. There's a template to download if you're starting from scratch. Assessors and developers you work with through TestConnect are added for you.

Can I send invoices and take card payments? What does it cost?

Yes, on Pro, which is free during the 60-day trial. Raise invoices from completed jobs with your logo, VAT and bank details. Customers pay by bank transfer, or by card if you connect your own Stripe account. Card payments carry Stripe's standard fees; TestConnect adds 0% and never surcharges your customer.

Does it link to my accounts software?

Accounting sync with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage is coming soon, on Pro. It isn't part of the free trial because we pay the accounting providers for each connection, but you can start paying early to use it.

For developers

Will it be reliable?

What housebuilders want to know before they book through TestConnect. More on the developers page.

What if nobody takes the job?

Jobs go first to testers already passing: those already working near your site that day get it, and an alert, straight away. An hour later it's offered to testers nearby with a free day, and after three hours to every tester whose working area covers the site. Tests within two working days go to everyone at once. If it still hasn't been taken after a day (or two days before the test, if that's sooner), you're told, with one tap to invite your usual testers, raise the fee, ask for prices, change the date or keep waiting. You can also invite testers yourself, give your preferred tester first refusal, or send the job to everyone at any time.

Can we keep using our usual tester or assessor?

Yes. Invite your tester to a job, make them preferred for a site so they get first refusal, or have work allocated to them automatically when they're free. If they're not on TestConnect yet, it's free for one tester to join. Your assessor can keep booking your tests as now. The marketplace is there for when your usual people are busy.

How do we know who's turning up?

Each booked test shows who is coming: the tester's first name and company, or, if your assessor sends testers under its own name, the tester's first name and the assessor's. Your site manager's link shows the arrival window, an "on the way" alert when the tester sets off (with a live arrival time if they share their location) and the arrival once they're on site. The tester's mobile is shared with the site by default, so your site manager can call or text them. For air tests, whoever posts the job sees the tester's scheme membership number, marked as self-declared, so it can be checked on the scheme's public register.

What if a tester cancels?

If a tester hands a job back, you're told straight away, with their reason, and the job reopens to other testers in the area, with fresh alerts to those nearby. If you'd only invited specific testers, it comes back to you to invite someone else. Turning up when agreed, or giving notice, is part of the code of conduct and of the service feedback testers receive.

Is it really free?

Yes, for developers and assessors, always, with no contract. Posting jobs, sites and plots, site manager links, readiness checks, Results and performance and the carbon report cost nothing. You pay the tester, or your assessor, for the test as you do now. Testers pay £5 a month per tester if they want the business tools, and we take no commission on any job.

Who sees our data?

Your own team; the assessor and the tester working on each job; and site managers, for their own sites only and never prices. Testers see a site's full address and contacts only once they've accepted a job there. Each organisation's records are kept apart inside the database itself, our support staff can only look if you allow it, and every look is logged. You can download all your data at any time.

Do we have to change how we work with our SAP assessor?

No. Your assessor can keep booking your tests, and you see progress, results and, by default, certificates for your developments in the same record, marked "Booked through" your assessor. Your assessor decides whether its testers attend under the assessor's name or their own, and you still see every result. You can also book some tests direct, and filter your tests and Results and performance by direct or through an assessor.

Does it support local firms?

Yes, that's why we built it. TestConnect is made for self-employed testers and small local firms, working together as a network. A job is only shown to testers whose working area covers your site, and those already working nearby that day are alerted straight away. We take no commission, so the fee goes to the local business that did the test. Less driving also means a local tester can price fairly and still make it pay, and can come back quickly for a retest.

Try it on your own jobs

Free for one tester, no card and no documents. Every new tester business gets Pro free for 60 days, to get a feel for it.
